Handling word formation in comparative linguistics
Word formation plays a central role in human language. Yet computational approaches to historical linguistics often pay little attention to it. This means that the detailed findings of classical historical linguistics are often only used in qualitative studies, yet not in quantitative studies. Based on human- and machine-readable formats suggested by the CLDF-initiative, we propose a framework for the annotation of cross-linguistic etymological relations that allows for the differentiation between etymologies that involve only regular sound change and those that involve linear and non-linear processes of word formation. This paper introduces this approach by means of sample datasets and a small Python library to facilitate annotation
ILC Operating Scenarios
The ILC Technical Design Report documents the design for the construction of
a linear collider which can be operated at energies up to 500 GeV. This report
summarizes the outcome of a study of possible running scenarios, including a
realistic estimate of the real time accumulation of integrated luminosity based
on ramp-up and upgrade processes. The evolution of the physics outcomes is
emphasized, including running initially at 500 GeV, then at 350 GeV and 250
GeV. The running scenarios have been chosen to optimize the Higgs precision
measurements and top physics while searching for evidence for signals beyond
the standard model, including dark matter. In addition to the certain precision
physics on the Higgs and top that is the main focus of this study, there are
scientific motivations that indicate the possibility for discoveries of new
particles in the upcoming operations of the LHC or the early operation of the
ILC. Follow-up studies of such discoveries could alter the plan for the
centre-of-mass collision energy of the ILC and expand the scientific impact of
the ILC physics program. It is envisioned that a decision on a possible energy
upgrade would be taken near the end of the twenty year period considered in
this report
Patrones léxicos compartidos en el dominio etnobiológico de las lenguas del Chaco: Análisis preliminar de patrones léxicos compartidos en el dominio etnobiológico. [The languages of the Gran Chaco from the perspective of lexical semantics: Preliminary analysis of shared lexical structures in the ethnobotanical domain].
With more than twenty languages belonging to six linguistic families, the Gran Chaco is a region of great interest for linguists dedicated to the typology and comparison of languages. However, while phonological and grammatical similarities have been the focus of most of these studies, the investigation of semantic patterns has so far played only a minor role. This work takes up the problem of the similarity and possible diffusion of features across the languages of the Chaco through the identification and analysis of shared lexico-semantic patterns in the ethnobiological vocabulary of sixteen languages of the region. Our research has been carried out with the assistance of specific annotation and data processing techniques using the EDICTORprogram, which allows, unlike classical methods, to work with a large corpus of digitally available data. The preliminary results of the analysis show a great similarity in the lexical motivation of the analyzed lexemes, mainly through formal patterns such as polysemy, derivation and composition, and semantic relations such as metaphor and metonym
Strong and Confined Acids Catalyze Asymmetric Intramolecular Hydroarylations of Unactivated Olefins with Indoles
In recent years, several organocatalytic asymmetric hydroarylations of activated, electron-poor olefins with activated, electron-rich arenes have been described. In contrast, only a few approaches that can handle unactivated, electronically neutral olefins have been reported and invariably require transition metal catalysts. Here we show how an efficient and highly enantioselective catalytic asymmetric intramolecular hydroarylation of aliphatic and aromatic olefins with indoles can be realized using strong and confined IDPi Brønsted acid catalysts. This unprecedented transformation is enabled by tertiary carbocation formation and establishes quaternary stereogenic centers in excellent enantioselectivity and with a broad substrate scope that includes an aliphatic iodide, an azide, and an alkyl boronate, which can be further elaborated into bioactive molecules
The effects of interactions between proline and carbon nanostructures on organocatalysis in the Hajos-Parrish-Eder-Sauer-Wiechert reaction
The non-covalent interactions of S-(-)-proline with the surfaces of carbon nanostructures (fullerene, nanotubes and graphite) change the nucleophilic-electrophilic and acid-base properties of the amino acid, thus tuning its activity and selectivity in the organocatalytic Hajos-Parrish-Eder-Sauer-Wiechert (HPESW) reaction. Whilst our spectroscopy and microscopy measurements show no permanent covalent bonding between S-(-)-proline and carbon nanostructures, a systematic investigation of the catalytic activity and selectivity of the organocatalyst in the HPESW reaction demonstrates a clear correlation between the pyramidalisation angle of carbon nanostructures and the catalytic properties of S-(-)-proline. Carbon nanostructures with larger pyramidalisation angles have a stronger interaction with the nitrogen atom lone pair of electrons of the organocatalyst, thereby simultaneously decreasing the nucleophilicity and increasing the acidity of the organocatalyst. These translate into lower conversion rates but higher selectivities towards the dehydrated product of Aldol addition
Design of Pre-Dumping Ring Spin Rotator with a Possibility of Helicity Switching for Polarized Positrons at the ILC
The use of polarized beams enhance the possibility of the precision
measurements at the International Linear Collider (ILC). In order to preserve
the degree of polarization during beam transport spin rotators are included in
the current TDR ILC Lattice. In this report some advantages of using a combined
spin rotator/spin flipper are discussed. A few possible lattice designs of spin

NLO-QCD corrections to e+ e- --> hadrons in models of TeV-scale gravity
We present results on NLO-QCD corrections to the process e+ e- --> hadrons
via photon-, Z- and graviton-exchange in the context of TeV-scale gravity
models. The quantitative impact of these QCD corrections for searches of extra

Inner-shelf circulation and sediment dynamics on a series of shoreface-connected ridges offshore of Fire Island, NY
Locations along the inner-continental shelf offshore of Fire Island, NY, are characterized by a series of shoreface-connected ridges (SFCRs). These sand ridges have approximate dimensions of 10 km in length, 3 km spacing, and up to similar to 8 m ridge to trough relief and are oriented obliquely at approximately 30 degrees clockwise from the coastline. Stability analysis from previous studies explains how sand ridges such as these could be formed and maintained by storm-driven flows directed alongshore with a key maintenance mechanism of offshore deflected flows over ridge crests and onshore in the troughs. We examine these processes both with a limited set of idealized numerical simulations and analysis of observational data. Model results confirm that alongshore flows over the SFCRs exhibit offshore veering of currents over the ridge crests and onshore-directed flows in the troughs, and demonstrate the opposite circulation pattern for a reverse wind. To further investigate these maintenance processes, oceanographic instruments were deployed at seven sites on the SFCRs offshore of Fire Island to measure water levels, ocean currents, waves, suspended sediment concentrations, and bottom stresses from January to April 2012. Data analysis reveals that during storms with winds from the northeast, the processes of offshore deflection of currents over ridge crests and onshore in the troughs were observed, and during storm events with winds from the southwest, a reverse flow pattern over the ridges occurred. Computations of suspended sediment fluxes identify periods that are consistent with SFCR maintenance mechanisms. Alongshore winds from the northeast drove fluxes offshore on the ridge crest and onshore in the trough that would tend to promote ridge maintenance. However, alongshore winds from the southwest drove opposite circulations. The wind fields are related to different storm types that occur in the region (low-pressure systems, cold fronts, and warm fronts). From the limited data set, we identify that low-pressure systems drive sediment fluxes that tend to promote stability and maintain the SFCRs while cold front type storms appear to drive circulations that are in the opposite sense and may not be a supporting mechanism for ridge maintenance
